Practice your interview skills, get feedback on your design work, and learn what makes a portfolio great at the 11th Annual AIGA Houston Student Portfolio Review on Friday, April 11, 2008 at the Museum of Printing History. The best design and advertising professionals in Houston will be on hand during the afternoon to conduct twenty minute one-on-one portfolio reviews with you. The review is a fantastic opportunity to personally meet and get to know the pros while engaging in some straight-shooting design talk. Where else can you practice your interview skills, get honest feedback about your work, and pick up tips and tricks on the dos and don’ts of portfolio presentation.
Rules of the Game
All college level junior or seniors who are majoring in design or advertising are welcome to attend. You must RSVP for this years event and the review is absolutely free. The first session of reviews begins at 12 noon and continues until 2:30. Don’t be late, this is strictly first come, first serve. From 2:30 until 3:30 you’ll take a break from reviewing and sit in on a panel discussion. This is when you get to ask a group of pros all of those burning design questions you’ve been formulating since your freshman year. At 3:30 the second session of reviews begins. More designers will be ready to review portfolios all the way until 6:00 pm. So when April 11 rolls around, pack up your portfolio, head over to the Museum of Printing History, and jump in line for your first review. We’ll be waiting for you!
FAQs
q: How much does the review cost?
a: AIGA Houston does not charge students to participate in the review. In other words, it’s free!
q: Do I have to register before April 11?
a: YES, it is required for this years event. Click here to RSVP for this event.
q: How does the review work?
a: When you arrive, you will sign in and get a number. When your number is called, you will have twenty minutes to show your portfolio to a professional in a one-on-one interview format. When your time is up, you can get another number and wait to see a different professional.
q: To how many professionals will I be able to present my portfolio?
a: It depends on when you come, how long you stay, and how many other students attend; here’s an educated guess though. If you get to the review at 12 noon and stay until 6 pm, you may be able to show your portfolio to 5 or 6 different professionals.
q: What should I wear to the review?
a: Look nice. Think of the review as a bunch of job interviews.
q: I want to show a website I designed. Will there be a computer I can use?
a: Nope, there won’t be computers at the review. If you have a laptop, bring it. If you don’t, print several screen shots of the site, mount, and show these.
q: Will there be any food at the review?
a: Yes. AIGA Houston will provide bottled water, soft drinks, and snacks
