AIGA Houston Design Legends Gala :
The President and Board of Directors of the AIGA Houston Chapter invite you to attend the 2007 Houston Design Legends Gala. Saturday, May 5th at 6 p.m. at the Houstonian Hotel.

An event honoring AIGA Houston 2006 Fellows Cheryl Beckett and Chris Hill and Recipient of the AIGA Houston 2006 Corporate Leadership Award, Walter P Moore.

What is the AIGA Houston Fellow Award?
The AIGA Houston Fellow award program is a means of recognizing mature designers who have made a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in practice and conduct within the design community. The areas of education, writing, leadership and reputation, as well as the practice of design are given equal consideration in measuring significant contribution.

What is the AIGA Houston Corporate Leadership Award?
The AIGA Houston corporate leadership award was established to recognize the role of perceptive and forward-thinking organizations that have been instrumental in the advancement of design be applying the highest standards, as a matter or policy. Recipients of this award demonstrate respect for the lives they touch, a rare commitment to consistency and quality, and a model for the successful interaction between aesthetics and pragmatics.

AN AIGA MEMBER: Meet Nuzi Barkatally
As our local design community continues to grow, we want to make it just a little easier for you to recognize your creative leaders, professionals, students and sponsors. In this month’s “meet a member” section, we feature student member Nuzi Barkatally.

Nuzi Barkatally is in her junior year of study at the University of Houston design program. She lives near the UH campus, but sometimes she goes home to visit her parents and her dalmatian, Cookie. Aside from making awesome design, Nuzi is also the AIGA UH student rep. In her spare time, Nuzi enjoys long walks along the Pacific beaches of Los Angeles (who doesn’t!) and random spurts of dancing.

Q: What made you want to study design?

Nuzi: In college I decided to take a Fundamentals of Graphic Design course for fun (I was a Communications major at the time). The class was an awakening for me! I had an amazing teacher from the graduate department, by the name of Ray Ogar. In that class, we were just making compositions of circles, but Ray would push our critical thinking skills. I found myself approaching things in a whole new way. I was hooked ever since.

Q: What inspires you?
Nuzi: People who stand up for what they believe in, especially when I see designers making a statement by means of their design.

So next time you see Nuzi at an AIGA event, wave hello.
